The assassination of the President sent everyone into a state of shock. Jackie, Caroline, and John Jr. took two weeks to vacate the White House, spending the winter with Averell Harriman's home in the Georgetown area of Washington DC. Later in 1964 she bought a Fifth Avenue apartment in New York City to try to protect the privacy of herself and her children.

Jackie then spent a year in mourning, making very little public appearances. Caroline once told her teacher that her mother cried frequently.

Later that same year Jackie made the decision to sell the home in Atoka, Virginia where the couple had planned on retiring to. It wasn't until 1967 when Jackie finally started making appearances, which were mostly memorial dedications for John and the Christening of the USS John F. Kennedy (pictured on the left.) It is Caroline who broke the bottle of Champagne on the boat.

Jackie also participated in the planning of the official memorial for her husband in Runnymede, England and oversaw the building of the John F. Kennedy Library.

Tabloid speculation started just as Jackie was getting back on her feet, including the rumors of her romantic connections with other men. 1968 it was a confirmed fact that Jackie had remarried to a wealthy Greek business man, Aristotle Onassis.

"I SHOULD HAVE GUESSED THAT IT WOULD BE TOO MUCH TO ASK TO GROW OLD WITH AND SEE OUR CHILDREN GROW UP TOGETHER. SO NOW, HE IS A LEGEND WHEN HE WOULD HAVE PREFERRED TO BE A MAN."
